February 21, 2021 / Source: The Bizz USA By Haarika Kalahasti; Edited by Adya Kumar Although COVID-19 has negatively impacted many small businesses, individuals have begun to step up to promote change. Another organization that emerged during this pandemic is Earthlinking. Earthlinking is a student-led organization that aims to spread awareness of environmental matters through promoting efforts such as sustainability. Through their work, they also aim to inspire others to utilize their passions and talents to benefit the environment. The organization was co-founded by three Los Angeles high school juniors, Katelyn Chu, Angela Hao, and Sanjana Tottempudi, interested in the medical field. Started in February of 2020, Earthlinking was intended to be a high school club at their local high school. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic had changed their plans but definitely sizeably increased their reach. “A lot of people don’t value the earth as much as Earthlinking does, and we wanted to make sure people, especially the younger generation, learn to value it and understand the importance of not hurting the earth”, Katelyn, the co-founder and co-president of Earthlinking says. What differentiates Earthlinking from other student-led organizations is its utter passion, consistency, and ability to create fun and engaging content for its audience. The team is dedicated to persistently advocate, educate, and serve their community in an enjoyable and memorable way. Through advocacy, they hope to use their platform to raise awareness of the importance of helping the earth and encourage them to do so! As for services, they offer opportunities for their members and ambassadors to not only gain volunteer opportunities but also help the earth. An opportunity they currently have available is their cartridge recycling program, in which they’ve partnered with another business to reduce pollution! Lastly, for education, they post frequent educational content on their platforms (Instagram, anchor/ Spotify podcasts, youtube, blog posts on the website, and more) and host engaging webinars with the objective to educate their audience about environmental topics. If interested in getting involved with Earthlinking, you can either become a member or an ambassador! As a member, you get the opportunity to involve in a variety of events, such as their unique social bonding experiences, get unique volunteering opportunities, and can be a part of the change to help the community. As an ambassador, you’ll be able to be behind the scenes of the operations while helping to make an impact on the community and gain connections! It’s known that all businesses have their ups and downs when starting. According to Sanjana, a co-founder, the Treasurer, and the Co-Director of Publicity, their biggest reward has been “being able to see how many people were interested. It really shows that it’s not just us who cares about the environment, it’s a lot of other people too. It was really surprising but also was very uplifting to see all the support we’ve gotten.” On the other hand, when asked for their biggest challenge, she said “getting our voice out was hard because people thought we were just another organization. But, after showing that we were dedicated and consistent, we gained more credibility and showed that we were serious about helping the community and helping to pave a better path for the future.” When asked for the advice they’d give to aspiring young entrepreneurs and business owners, all three co-founders offered great advice. Katelyn said, “You must have persistence and perseverance. Even if you have big struggles or times that you doubt yourself during the start, just keep going and push through the limits and get the goals you want to achieve.” In addition, Angela, the co-founder, and co-president said, “Have a strong solid purpose you are passionate about. Having that core belief or a solid purpose of what you are passionate about or something in your mind. Having that is very important because you are able to build off that foundation and think about what steps you want to take to reach that. It also helps you focus on your core and not branch out to other things, which is what every successful business does.” Lastly, Sanjana said “Make sure you are surrounding yourself with people who have the same goal or are passionate about the same thing. If everyone has a clear goal in mind, it creates more successful and longtime organizations”. The Bizz USA recommends that you check out Earthlinking and get involved! Their passion for the earth and to lead in their community is something the world needs a bit more of, and it’s impressive to see young leaders, like Katelyn Chu, Angela Hao, and Sanjana Tottempudi make a difference!
